Our Vision

A novel coronavirus infection that started in Wuhan, China in late 2019 has been linked to approximately 5 million infections and more than 300,000 fatalities worldwide as of May 22, 2020, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The COVID-19 pandemic caused tremendous losses and effects in nations all over the world in its early phases, before vaccinations and antiviral medications were fully developed. Unimaginable situations such as the inability to travel,  remote learning and work from home, economic collapse, and the cessation of international exchanges, all occurred within a short period of time due to the new coronavirus infection. People in Taiwan had previously experienced SARS, and the government's leadership and cooperation with the public made it feasible to control the epidemic effectively in the era of COVID-19.

JECC Saving the Children from Crisis With Effective Altruism

Children around the world are facing COVID-19 and wars, which have brought huge impacts on life, psychology, and society. It's the first time that Jebb Care for Children (JECC) held the activity for children's rights initiative, starting with Jebb Eglantyne, the mother of children's rights, speaking for children, and introducing the concept "Effective Altruism" from Peter Singer, the father of philanthropy. We call on companies and people across the world to take effective humanitarian actions based on scientific evidence.

Exploring Repurposed Drugs Against the Novel Coronavirus Using Big Data and AI

This study starts with clinically proven safe drugs and employs big data and AI to explore new applications against the novel coronavirus. The team simulated the binding of the COVID-19 virus with drugs to predict outcomes, creating the 'DockCoV2' database, which is made available to medical research teams worldwide as a reference for future experimental designs. We also utilized genetic drug data to investigate existing drugs with antiviral properties, which showed inhibitory effects at a concentration as low as 20 nanomoles in cellular tests

The international collaboration subproject has established a comprehensive framework for international cooperation and has created project research teams with international competitiveness on specific issues. Currently, the subproject has conducted multiple webinars on various topics and institutions and organized large-scale international hybrid online-offline seminars. In the establishment of internationally competitive project research teams, the subproject leader, Ms. Yun-Ru Huang, has collaborated with the National University of Singapore to establish an international partnership on 'COVID-19 in Pregnancy.' This collaboration aims to understand the mother-to-fetus transmission mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 and the immune barrier function of the human placenta. Research findings have been published, and Ms. Huang received the 2020 nanoString Pacific Spatial Biology Research Award from the U.S. nanoString company

Developing Novel Drugs with Potential Anti-COVID-19 Activity Targeting the Cellular Furin Protease

The research team focuses on the development of antiviral drugs by targeting key host molecules that regulate virus infection and replication. They have discovered that the cellular Furin protease can cleave the Spike protein of the novel coronavirus, which is crucial for Spike-induced cell fusion (Syncytium). Further, targeting the Furin protease as a target for antiviral drug development, they have identified two Furin protease inhibitors. These inhibitors can effectively block virus entry into cells and inhibit viral RNA transcription, thus effectively suppressing the replication and cell fusion pathology induced by the novel coronavirus, including the D614G variant, in host cells. These findings serve as promising lead compounds for the subsequent development of potential anti-COVID-19 drugs.

年輕族群免疫防火牆成形 可望由大流行轉為地方流行

由於基礎劑疫苗施打保護力效期在三月中後逐漸衰退,加上第三劑疫苗施打速度趨緩,無法補足族群保護力失效,使得三月底開始產生多點群聚感染,加上在四月初面臨年輕人及青少年族群BNT疫苗保護力亦逐漸失效,Omicron在北北基桃縣市群聚感染流行速度快速,在各年齡層感染個案皆迅速累積。台灣本土流行曲線就如同紐西蘭疫情走向(圖1),在達5月27日流行高點時,已明顯開始下降,雖然相較於紐西蘭,台灣無症狀及輕症適應期略長,但疫情曲線仍然快速下降。即便各區域仍有所不同,不過整體而言,已經下降,特別是雙北、基、桃。根據國際經驗

台灣Omicron超額死亡科學解密

台灣近期在面臨境外移入個案增加且免疫保護力失效之下,在三月中後爆發群聚感染,然而如同全球在疫苗施打及Omicron輕症化之影響,確診個案一定會上升,但絶大部份是輕症或無症狀,相較於過去未有疫苗施打及Alpha與Delta較多重症是非常不同,如台灣自2022年1月至4月27日累積本土個案51663名,多數為無症狀或輕症,中重症為中度者有142位,重症以上僅有17名(0.3‰),死亡7名,致死率相當低,為0.14‰

大年初三,台大公衛系教授陳秀熙等今舉行「公共衛生與戰爭科學線上直播」,陳秀熙說明,新春團聚時節,武漢肺炎(新型冠狀病毒病,COVID-19)、烏俄戰爭等阻止家人團聚,數位科技可運用於繫起遠方家人、促成幸福感,應用於醫療則可緩解醫療資源不足之照護困境,例如法國和瑞典遠距看診服務已達30%。

由於俄國軍事占領烏東地區邊境城市,近期烏克蘭多處城市受砲襲,平民死亡風險(無辜傷亡指數)再度回升。台大公共衛生學院教授陳秀熙於9日在「新冠肺炎科學園地─公共衛生與戰爭科學」線上直播中先指出,「人類應該無法有能力再承受使用核武大戰,對人類一定會造成非常悲慘的結果。」
